Why film aesthetics cannot be reduced to a single score

The film look has several dimensions and films differ widely, so a single number is only a starting point.

FilmLook gives each photo a Film Look Score from 0 to 100. This page explains what the score can tell you and what it can't.

The film look has several dimensions

A photo can have lovely highlight roll-off and very digital colour, or film-like grain and tone with the framing and light of a phone snapshot. FilmLook breaks the look into readings: highlights, tone, colour, texture, depth and atmosphere. Two photos can both score 70, one with every reading middling and the other high on most and low on one. Look at the readings before the score.

Films differ widely

Velvia landscapes are saturated and dense, Portra portraits soft, Tri-X street photos gritty, and CineStill 800T night scenes glow red around their lights. All of them are "film", and side by side they have almost nothing in common. That is why FilmLook names the closest film look as well as the score. A photo that looks nothing like Portra may still look like another film.

The score is a judgement, not a measurement

The score comes from a vision model's judgement combined with measurements of the photo. It varies: analyse the same photo again and it can move by a few points. It is also affected by what it hasn't been told, such as whether this is a genuine film scan.

Intent matters more than the score

Many good photographs look nothing like film and don't need to. If what you want is clean, sharp, accurate colour, a low score is not a problem. The score answers one question only: how close are this photo's tone and colour to the way film forms them?

How to use it

The score and the film names are aesthetic references. FilmLook reproduces no film and has no connection with any film maker.
